AORERE PATHWAYS

L2 P-TECH (DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES PATHWAY COURSE)

pre-requisites

L2PTE is the continuation of the Level 1 P-Tech Program (L1PTE).  Priority will be given to students who have successfully completed L1PTE, but applications are welcomed from students who feel they will benefit from a Digital Technologies pathway program.

Students who have successfully completed L1COM would be well placed to switch to L2PTE.  Those wanting to join the L2PTE program at Level 2 without having completed L1PTE or L1COM would ideally meet some or all of the following criteria:
- Successfully completed Level 1 Maths 12 credits at Achieved or better

- Successfully completed a Level 1 Digital Technologies course. E.g. ANG DIT or ROB
- Interested in a career or further study in the Digital Technologies field
- Have an intention to continue with the P-Tech program over the next 2-4 years
- Enjoys problem solving
- Regular attendance
- Has L4/5 English language skills

NOTE:
It is not possible to do both L2COM and L2PTE due to assessment crossovers.

course description

P-Tech is a 3-5 year pathway course (starting at Year 11), which will support students into IT careers through a partnership made up of Aorere College,  IBM, the Warehouse Group and MIT.  P-Tech is brand new to New Zealand.   Currently only offered at Aorere College and Manurewa High School as a pilot program, P-Tech has been operating successfully in the USA and Australia for a number of years.

Students accepted for P-Tech will complete NCEA achievement standards focusing on developing a range of different Digital Technologies skills, (e.g. digital graphics, app development, web design, computer programming, databases, robotics).  They will also participate in regular off-site workshops, mentoring and other experiences aimed at developing digital and professional skills identified as specific to the needs of the IT industry.

A student choosing L2PTE  would be committed to gaining a career in the IT industry.  They will also intend to continue with the P-Tech program at L3, after which they will be supported in either entering a career in the IT field, or continuing the P-Tech pathway with MIT.  The P-Tech pathway with MIT will continue to offer similar partnership experiences (industry work experience, mentoring, etc), after which students will be supported into an IT career.  Internships are also possible outcomes from committing to the 2-4 year pathway.

L2PTE Program Structure
L2PTE is not a standard option selection.  Please read the following if considering choosing L2PTE.

Students choose 6 subject options at Year 12.  The 2021 L2PTE program includes 8 periods of P-Tech (this counts as 2 subjects).  Students are also required to choose English and Maths, as the program views these subjects as complementary to a Digital Technologies pathway.

A L2PTE student's subject selection would look like this:

Subject Option 1: English
Subject Option 2: Maths
Subject Option 3: L2PTE
Subject Option 4: L2PTE
Subject Option 5: Subject option of students choosing
Subject Option 6: Subject option  of students choosing

The 8 periods of L2PTE (P-Tech) will be made up of as follows:
  • 4 periods at MIT, Manukau (One full day) - Students will complete 2 x Level 4 papers worth 15 NZQA credits each (total of 30 NZQA credits for the year.  (Note these credits do not count towards NCEA, but do count towards a Level 4 Certificate in IT, to completed during Year 13). Transport to MIT is provided.
  • 4 periods at school - Completing L2 NCEA assessments for 19 Level 2 NCEA credits.
