pre-requisites
L2PTE is the continuation of the Level 1 P-Tech Program (L1PTE). Priority will be given to students who have successfully completed L1PTE, but applications are welcomed from students who feel they will benefit from a Digital Technologies pathway program.
Those wanting to join the L2PTE program at Level 2 without having completed L1PTE would ideally meet some or all of the following criteria:
- Demonstrate strength in maths. (E.g. 4P or above at Y10, or Merit achievement in L1).
- Interested in a career or further study in the Digital Technologies field
- Have an intention to continue with the P-Tech program over the next 2-4 years
- Enjoys problem solving
- Regular attendance
Note: Students can select multiple L2 Digital Technologies courses, but cannot select both L2COM & L2PTE due to assessment crossovers.
course description
P-Tech is a 3-5 year pathway course which will support students into IT careers through a partnership made up of Aorere College, IBM, the Warehouse Group and MIT. P-Tech has been operating successfully in the USA and Australia for a number of years.
Students accepted for P-Tech will complete NCEA achievement standards focusing on developing a range of different Digital Technologies skills, (e.g. computer programming, databases, project management or understanding computer science concepts). They will also participate in regular off-site workshops, mentoring and other experiences aimed at developing digital and professional skills identified as in high demand for the IT industry.
A student choosing L2PTE would be committed to gaining a career in the IT industry. They will also be considering contining with the P-Tech program at L3, after which they will be supported in either entering a career in the IT field, or continuing the P-Tech pathway with MIT. The P-Tech pathway with MIT will continue to offer similar partnership experiences (industry work experience, mentoring, etc), after which students will be supported into an IT career. Internships are also possible outcomes from committing to the 2-4 year pathway.
L2PTE Program Structure
L2PTE students will attend a full day at MIT (where they will complete a NZQA Level 4 Certificate in IT) and also have P-Tech as a subject at school where they will complete NCEA assessments. As for all pathways involving attendance at MIT, this will reduce face to face contact for at least one other subject, but timetable adjustments can be made to minimise this impact, and students will be expected to ensure they keep up to date with any subject where this occurs.
